The national cervical screening program has been set up to detect pre-cancerous changes in the cervix so that they can be treated at an early stage and progression to cancer can be stemmed. Colposcopy is required when the cervical smear is abnormal and/or there is presence of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which is the main cause for cervical cancer. Colposcopy may also be needed if there are certain symptoms such as persistant bleeding after sexual intercourse. Colposcopy is a procedure to find out if there are any abnormal cells on the cervix or vagina. This is done by putting some dyes on the cervix and looking through a microscope (colposcope). Depending on the colposcopy findings, it is decided whether a treatment is needed to remove the abnormal area of the cervix.
